What is Video Game Emulation?

Video game emulators are software programs that that allow your computer to act as a video game console and play games that are stored as ROM files. Emulators for popular systems such as N64, SNES, NES, PS1, Game boy, Sega can be found on multiple sites and are usually available for free downloading. Of course, The ROM files can always be found close by. This makes them must own software for any hardcore gamer, especially if they like older games like Super Mario or Pac Man. These low requirement games work on some of the oldest computers.
Tutorials and how to videos are all over the internet, making emulation even easier to use for the computer illiterate gamer. YouTube and various websites contain everything you need to know about downloading, preparing, and playing emulators on your PC. anyone having trouble or trying to get started with emulation can make great use of the tutorials.
I'm sure your already wondering about the legality of this kind of software and how safe it is to download. As far as I know, owning the emulators themselves is completely legal. In order to legally download the ROMS or game files you must own the cartridge or CD format of the game. This legal loophole seems very hard to check and balance. (If I download a game from a site, how is anyone going to know if I own the cartridge or CD?)
It is a mystery to me if this software craze will be beneficial or harmful to the video game producers. I'm certain their is a good way to market this type of software legally in some sort of bundle or package deal that will eliminate some of the free downloading and make emulation a little more user friendly and not to mention profitable. For instance, if I were to happen upon a software CD that included a top of the line Super Nintendo Entertainment System emulator along with thirty or forty of the platforms best game titles for a reasonable price I would jump on it. The goal of that would be to eliminate all the hassle of trying to find and use emulators downloaded free of the internet. This internet epidemic is still in its infancy and should be scrutinized with money in mind.

You might wonder what an emulator is. Emulators allow your computer to act like a console system such as the Apple IIe or the Atari 2600, which are used to emulate the hardware of a variety of classic arcade games.
Are all classic arcade games emulated? No, but those games made before 1992 are. Not all systems are easy to emulate.
Why is there a need to emulate classic arcade games? There are three major reasons why:
1. Popularity - if the system is popular, even if it is classic, the more effort is pushed to emulate it.
2. Availability of the Information - if the system contains a lot of information, it will be easier to emulate. If a game has never been emulated before, it will require a lot of reverse engineering, which could at times be frustrating.
3. Technical Hurdles - the hardware limits restrictions that are hard to avoid. For example, it took quite some time before the Atari 7800 was emulated, due to the encryption algorithm which prohibited games from being loaded. In addition, newer systems may lack the absolute horsepower to have the game run at a playable, and faster speed.
Although emulators are difficult to run, especially if it is your first time, you must download an emulator and unzip it. If you are not familiar with the procedures, you must read the documentation carefully.
Emulators are compound pieces of software. Most emulators may not perfectly emulate the capability of the system it is trying to copy. The imperfections in some emulators may be minor, sometimes timing problems may occur. Some emulators won't run games at all, or worse have some display problems. Some emulators may be deficient in joystick support, sound, and other significant features.
In writing an emulator, you will undergo a difficult process which requires attaining the precise system information, and figuring out how to emulate it with the software code.
There are two different types of emulators. The first one is the single-system or the single-game emulator. Examples of these are an Atari 2600 emulator, NES emulator, and an Apple II emulator. These emulators can only emulate one kind of game or system. The second type of emulators is the multi-emulators. The best example of this is the Multi-Arcade Machine Emulator or the MAME. MAME can emulate hundreds of arcade games, although not all arcade games can run on the same kind of system. That is a huge generalization, but the reason multi-emulators require more resources compared to single system emulators, in most cases.
The start of emulation has opened a lot of opportunities for companies to take advantage of their resources. Why spend a lot of time reprogramming or porting the classic arcade games to a new console when you can easily write an upright emulator. Emulation is the solution to these problems, and gives the gamers an exact replica of the classic games they love and want to acquire.

Have you ever heard of video game emulators? Do you want to know more about what they are and how they work? A video game emulator is a type of computer program invented to use one computer system to help it act like a different system. There are actually many different types of computer emulators out there and many different ways in which they are used.
For the sake of video games, this can be beneficial because it allows a player with a modern computer to play video games from older systems or platforms without going out to purchase that original system or machine. In fact, you can even use game emulators to play games for platforms that are now obsolete. Some people just use them because they prefer to play the games on their PC instead of the console.
Console emulators can work by recreating the other system and making it compatible with your computer. The most popular use for these is to revisit games from past consoles without having the console system anymore. If you enjoyed games on your Atari, Nintendo, original Playstation, Sega and more, you might be able to find your favorite games on an emulator.
Video game emulators are also sometimes used to "mod" or modify these older games and to translate them into different languages they may not have originally been available for. People have even created new games for the older game consoles to be played with emulators.
The idea of playing your favorite old console game on your new PC at home may sound exciting but it's important to note that there is also a great deal of legal controversy regarding video game emulators. So is it legal?
The question of legality with video game emulators involves copyright. If the original copyright of the game belongs to the game developer, does anyone else have the right to recreate that game for a different platform? The controversy centers on the video game downloads, or ROM's, in this situation.
The video games are subject to copyright and it can be illegal to download them if you have not purchased the serial rights to own the game. It can also be a violation to use them when you have not purchased the game. So video game emulators are legal but downloading pirated video games or ROM's is not.
Most websites that offer video game emulators come with a disclaimer that warns you not to download any video games that you do not already own the original, paid version of. When this warning is disregarded and people begin to download games they do not own rights to play, this becomes a legal issue.
While video game emulators are still a controversial issue, it is not currently illegal to own the emulators themselves. However, it's important that you become fully aware of copyright laws before downloading any video games to use with these emulators.
